Older housing is the defining thing here. Georgian and Victorian property in York and Harrogate generally wants a four or six-panel door in proportion with the room — a flat modern door in a high-ceilinged Victorian front room tends to look mean, whatever the finish. The stone cottages further west take a ledged and braced door far better than a moulded one.

If the property is listed or in a conservation area, check before you order rather than after. Internal doors are usually outside planning control, but listed building consent can extend to internal features, and it is a short phone call to the conservation officer to be sure. We would rather ask the question at the quote stage than have a customer take doors out again.

The practical constraint is that older openings are rarely square, and in a house that has moved over two hundred years they can be a long way out. We measure at several heights and scribe on site where needed. It is slower than a new-build fit and we price it that way — but a door with an even gap all round is the difference between a job that looks finished and one that does not.
